Philippine’s First Gold Medal in Hanoi SEA Games 2022

Philippines garnered its first gold medal during the Southeast Asian Games (SEA games) in Hanoi last May 11, 2022. Mary Francine Padios competed in the seni tunggal event of the women’s pencak silat. The Philippines is ranked top 4 in the overall medal tally with 1 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze (as of May 12, 2022).

The Southeast Asian Games started last Wednesday, May 12, 2022 and is scheduled to end on May 23, 2022. This year’s SEA Games will feature 40 sports across 526 events and relies on the participation of more than 5,400 athletes from 11 different countries.

Gold Medal for Philippine Athlete

Mary Francine Padios is a native of Kalibo, Aklan. With a score of 9.960 points, she defeated the defending champion of Indonesia, Puspa Arum Sari, who scored 9945 points. Padios’ father has been a big inspiration. He then fell into a coma after figuring in a car accident on the way to Aklan just before Christmas last year.

He has been motivating me ever since,” said Padios.

The Philippine kurash team also came up big on Wednesday and churned out six medals: three silvers and three bronzes. Helen Aclopen (women’s -48kg), Charmea Quelino (women’s -52kg), and Sydney Sy (women’s +87kg) all netted silver, while George Baclagan (men’s 90kg), Renzo Cazeñas (men’s 81kg), and Al Llamas (men’s -60kg) clinched a bronze each.

Olympic rower Cris Nievarez added a silver to the Philippines’ medal tally as he and partner CJ Jasmin placed second in the men’s double sculls. Philippines’ other two bronze medals came from pencak silat courtesy of Jefferson Rhey Loon, James El Mayagma, and Rick Rod Ortega (men’s seni regu) and rowing courtesy of Joanie Delgaco, Amelyn Pagulayan, Josephine Qua, Kristine Paraon (women’s quadruple sculls).

A day before the SEA Games formally open on Tuesday, the Philippines now has 1 gold, 5 silvers, and, 5 bronzes as the men’s beach handball team finished behind champion Vietnam on Tuesday.
