Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann – First Female President of Silliman University

Silliman University is a private institution that caters the educational needs from kindergarten to elementary, junior high, senior high and college. For this coming school year 2018-2019, the students of the said institute will be under the hands of a new president – a female president.

The first-ever president of Silliman University took the formal overturn ceremony last June 01, 2018 at the Silliman University Church with the university’s faculty and staff as witnesses. Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann is replacing Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, who served his terms as SU president for 12 years from 2006 to 2018.

It is a privilege and a joy to be back here. I commit myself to the vision of our institution committed to total human development,” said Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann in her Video Message.

Originally from Molave of Zamboanga del Sur, Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann served as the vice-president of the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia. Prior to this, she also spent 21 years in teaching, training, research and community engagement and administrative work. Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann is a registered psychologist and certified specialist in social psychology. Today, she officially the thirteenth president of Silliman University.

Silliman University in Dumaguete City

Silliman University was established in 1901 with Dumaguete City being the home of the first ever Protestant/Christian based school in the country. Silliman is one of only five universities in the Philippines with “Institutional Accreditation” by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP). Institutional Accreditation is the highest certification given to an educational institution after an over-all examination of its number of accredited programs, the quality of its facilities, services and faculty.
