Livelihood Programs in Negros Oriental
The Department of Social Welfare and Development – Negros Island Region (DSWD-NIR) reported Tuesday that in Negros Oriental, there were over 2,000 beneficiaries of two livelihood programs implemented during the year 2016 with almost P36 million in cash assistance for capital livelihood projects and micro-enterprises. Livelihood projects included livestock fattening and raising, fresh egg production and cassava growing.
In Negros Oriental, the sustainable livelihood program (SLP) is being implemented in 20 local government units, including Dumaguete City and Bais City. One of the beneficiaries was very grateful for the positive changes in their lives through her availment of the community store livelihood project.
For the training and facilitation for employment program, more than 1,000 beneficiaries were able to avail of the program and at present, some are still undergoing training. Courses that have national certification (NC) were offered such as Food and Beverage Servicing NC II and Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC I. These courses are according to the standard of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the government agency tasked to supervise teaching of technical and vocational courses.
Shalaine Marie Lucero, DSWD-NIR officer in-charge, said that she is hoping that standards of living will be improved through the implementation of these projects. There are over 9,000 beneficiaries of the SLP for the whole NIR.
