Solar Powers in Silliman University

The Silliman University in Dumaguete City has been known to have an agreement for an estimated amount of one hundred million pesos (P 100,000,000.00) of solar power generation in the campus of the said university.

The first-ever and largest solar power generation projects at the instructional level was signed by both the Silliman University president Dr. Ben Malayang III and Orion president Rynor G. Jamandor.

Silliman University will take no part in financing the project. However, they will do their part in providing the required space area to where the solar power generations will be installed. Orion, being the developer and the supplier, on their part will do the installation and maintenance of the solar power energy.

“The project will cover the installation of 1.2 megawatts of solar power, with Silliman University to endeavor to consume as much as the 100 percent solar power generated on campus,” said Dr. Malayang.

According to Dr. Ben Malayang III, this project was designed to minimize the carbon footprint of the university.

Rynor Jamandor, who is the Orion president, meanwhile explained his company has chosen Silliman University as the recipient of this Build, Operate and Transfer scheme project because of its commitment to environmental conservation and protection.

“The 1.2MW solar project on campus is equivalent to a savings of 10-million or more liters of gasoline burned every day emitting enormous amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,” he said.

“Further, the 1.2MW solar energy at Silliman University is equivalent to about 250 cars that are burning gasoline taken off the streets,”  he added.
