Misa de Gallo

Misa de Gallo is Spanish for “rooster’s mass” and is a tradition in Roman Catholic for the mass celebration around midnight of Christmas Eve. The biggest and most celebrated place of the Misa de Gallo is in the Sta. Catherina de Alejandria Cathedral Church.

The lively mass is celebrated every year with different themes and much excitement as small fireworks display after the mass are set-up by the church.  Part of the Misa de Gallo is the count- down where in all town’s people are invited to socialize with. The count-down has shown to give a more exciting meaning of Christmas Day.

Schedules of the Misa de Gallo

Bishop Julito B. Cortes of the Diocese of Dumaguete announced that the 2015 nine-day Misa de Gallo will start on December 16 and end until December 24, 2015. The Misa de Gallo of this year he said will be focused more on the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

“The faithful should make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, participate in the Holy Eucharist with a reflection of mercy, make the profession of faith, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, Pope Francis,” Bishop Julito B. Cortes of the Diocese of Dumaguete said.

Bishop Julito B.  Cortes also announced that he had designated other sites for pilgrimage to the Holy Door: the St. James the Greater Parish in Tanjay City, the St. Nicholas de Bari Parish in Siaton town and the St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Siquijor, Siquijor.
