ALS Graduates from Jail
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete City, is proud of its 16 detainees who recently graduated as learners under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd). Three graduated from elementary and 13 from the secondary level, six of whom are females. They were given certificates of graduation after passing the accreditation and equivalency exams.
ALS – The Alternative Learning System
The Alternative Learning System is a non-formal education system of the DepEd and in the case of BJMP, weekly sessions every Friday for one year were conducted by mobile teachers, one each for the different levels. They were Mary Ann Frances Therese Omangay for the secondary level and Joy Araneta-Mama for the elementary level.
Evangel Luminarias, DepEd Superintendent, said that they are proud of the new ALS graduates from BJMP because despite their circumstances and difficulties, they never wavered and their perseverance paid off. The secondary level graduates can proceed to college after serving their term in the BJMP while the elementary graduates may proceed to the secondary level.
There is another ALS batch with 24 enrollees in the secondary level and five in the elementary level.
