218 Negros Oriental Villages as Geohazards

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas has identified 218 villages in Negros Oriental as geohazards after conducting a 1:10,000 scale assessment and mapping.  Intensive information campaigns were immediately conducted in the areas prone to landslide and flooding during heavy rains, attended by risk reduction officers, public school teachers, local government officials, members of the Philippine National Police and Bureau of Fire Protection.

According to MGB-7, it is important for residents to be aware of and for local government officials to formulate effective disaster responses based on these results because a proactive and informed community is a significant factor in preventing, or at least minimizing, damage cause by calamities.
