Workers in Dumaguete protest for being dismissed
Dismissed workers of a business process outsourcing (BPO) firm in Dumaguete City were unhappily protesting around the city last Monday despite the lack of mayor’s permit. These frustrated employees were said to be dismissed for no particular reason by the firm.
Workers on the loose
Around 9:30 am of Monday, some fifteen grouped people were seen at the vicinity of a shopping center carrying placards that were intended for SPi Global.
Danny Cordova, Anakpawis-Negros Oriental coordinator, said that their party (Kabataan and Anakpawis Partylist) joined the protesting to condemn the gross neglect of the worker’s rights.
According to a certain Maria Anna Amahit, one of the 100 dismissed worker, complained that the protesting action was necessary because the company illegally dismissed them with no just reason or what so ever, thus, affecting their lives as well as their families.
Upon hearing this, Secretary General Candido Ebarle of Kabataan-Negros Oriental enjoined the workers in order to lambast SPi Global-CRM allegedly for their inhuman or rude scheme of dismissing away their workers s that they can replace them with new ones.
Another side of the story
After hearing these complains, the company thoroughly explained their actions of dismissing their workers. According to the company, they wanted to avoid giving too many responsibilities on the worker’s shoulders. This may also cause higher benefits and much higher labor cost compared to the contractual labor policy, which is why they dismissed their workers as soon as possible.
Dismissed workers were also said to hear the consents and asked for assistants from the Department of Labor and Employment and the National Labor Relations Commission regarding of the said actions.
If this dilemma is caused by only miscommunication and misunderstanding, the Department of Labor and Employment and the National Labor Relations Commission for sure will not be so happy to get disturbed by such things.
