Land Offered for Drug Rehab Center
The Diocese of Dumaguete, headed by Bishop Julito Cortes, is offering a 14-hectare farm lot in Silab, Amlan, Negros Oriental to be used as a drug rehab center, the same location that the local government unit is also looking at for the same purpose. In a meeting of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Negros Oriental chapter Wednesday, several mayors pledged to help in the construction of a drug rehabilitation center there.
With the more than 700,000 drug dependents all over the country who signified their intention to undergo rehabilitation, there is an obvious lack of centers that can accommodate this number. Amlan Mayor Gino dela Cruz said that in a recent forum with Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael Sueno in Davao City, construction of only four drug rehab centers were approved which can accommodate around 12,000. That’s why the offer of the diocese came at a very opportune time.
On October 19, the diocese and representatives of the 7th Day Adventists will meet with Department of Health Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial for specific instructions on this matter. Ubial will be in Negros Oriental for a DOH national staff meeting.
