Fire brigades for Dumaguete barangays

In the celebration of the Fire Prevention Month this March, the Bureau of Fire Protection in Dumaguete City has held activities for all the citizens and firemen alike. Another main activity that will help promote the Fire Prevention Month is the participation of the volunteering barangay fire brigades.

Fire Prevention Month

Reports proudly say that barangays have shown 100% interest on the organized activities, said the Dumaguete City fire Chief, Maj. Arnulfo Sayson, whose team of trainers were willing to share their skills and wisdom on fire prevention and suppression to all the barangays who have signified their intention to join in the program.

Sayson said it is easy to extinguish a fire at the early stage even with pails and cans, rather than fight a big one with super tankers.

As of the moment only the barangays of Tabuctubig, Banilad and Daro have completed the training. The rest are still being scheduled for their respective drills.

Sayson said that a barangay volunteer fire brigade member will be issued an identification card by the provincial fire marshal, so when he is in other places of the province, he can visit any of the fire stations.

Sayson also stressed before any issuance of the fire safety inspection certificate, a fire safety inspection is being conducted to check on deficiencies, failure to comply would result to non-issuance of the fire safety certificate. These violations include non-functional extinguishers, blocked exits, among others.

The fire chief, however said, after furnishing an inspection report, establishment owners normally complies with the requirements.

In another development, the Bureau of Fire Protection in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental has reported that it has responded to at least 18 fires from January up to the present with no casualties and with an estimated cost of P23,050 only.

Dumaguete City fire chief Maj. Arnulfo Sayson said the fires are mostly structural, electrical and grass fires, three of which happened in Barangay Bajumpandan at the sugarcane plantation of City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria.

Responding firemen were told by cane cutters in the area it was the mayor who allegedly ordered the burning of the ready-to-harvest sugar cane plantation that had caused alarm in the neighborhood, especially that the area is densely populated.

Further investigation, however, disclosed it was the cane cutters themselves who caused the burning of the cane field to save on time.
