The Dumaguete City Social Welfare Office was at the forefront of the Family Week celebration from September 24 – 30 during which therapy sessions by trained social workers were conducted as well as livelihood skills training for wives to augment their family’s income. According to George Gilvero, Dumaguete City Family Week Steering Committee Chairman, there is a strong bond between family and society, that is, the sanctity of the family must be preserved so that it will become the cornerstone, the strong foundation of society.
A forum for the week-long celebration was held during the Kapihan sa PIA (Philippine Information Agency) with the topic “Matatag na Pamilya, Maunlad na Bukas”. Speakers from the Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WME) talked about their experiences as a family. Adriano and Hilnora Gregorio stressed the importance of the relationship of husband and wife, quality time spent together as a family and values education at the early stages of their children’s lives, among others. They believe that these will eventually have a positive effect on the children as they become parents themselves.
Another WME speaker, Juanito Tamparong, is a product of a broken family and he related how his experiences growing up in an irregular family setting pushed him not to make history repeat itself when he got married.
