DOLE Conducts Info Campaign on Contractualization
In response to President Duterte’s call to stop the practice of contractualization, the Department of Labor and Employment – Negros Oriental Field Office (DOLE – NORFO) conducted various information campaigns on contractualization. This was disclosed by Kenrick Villaluz, senior labor employment officer, adding that the targets are to reduce contractualization by 50% this year and to totally eliminate it by next year, thereby moving a step towards ensuring security of tenure to employees. It has been the practice of some business establishments to hire employees for less than six months to circumvent applicable laws, rules and regulations on regularization.
Edward Du, president of the Negros Oriental Chinese Chamber of Commerce (NOCCCI), is encouraging employers to be compliant with labor laws although he expressed his concern that some jobs really necessitate contractualization, such as construction workers who are hired on a per project basis.
Socorro Mira, head of Dumaguete City’s Public Service Employment Office (PESO), welcomes this latest development on contractualization because the workers referred by them to business establishments will have the chance to be regularized.
