One of the national holidays of the Philippines is the Bonifacio Day. This is when Filipinos celebrate the birthday of one of Philippines’ greatest heroes, Andrés Bonifacio.

Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro or commonly known as just Andrés Bonifacio was born on the 30th of November in 1863. Andrés Bonifacio is considered as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution” against Spanish colonization. Bonifacio, along with other men, were the first to start a movement called “Katipunan” in the early 1892.

Samahang Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan

The Katipunan was abbreviated to KKK. Samahang Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK) was a secret organization, which highly aimed to gain freedom and independence from the Spaniards through revolution, until it was found in 1896.

Andrés Bonifacio became the military leader and the president of the Katipunan. After the formation of the organization Andrés Bonifacio along with his men recruited more Filipinos for their cause. Not long after they became one of the most prominent revolutionary force that was faced by the Spaniards.

In honor of the wonders Andrés Bonifacio contributed to change the life of many Filipinos it had been made into a national holiday in 1921 through Act No. 2964. Most schools and businesses will be closed for the day, but some shops remain open, so that people around the country can visit monuments dedicated to Bonifacio.

Here in Dumaguete City the members of the Knight of Columbus paid their tributes and respect to Andrés Bonifacio by serving as honorary guard to marks his 152nd birth anniversary.
