300,000 Mangroves for Negros ‘10M in 10 ‘Project

Negros Oriental is aiming to plant at least plant 300,000 mangrove trees around the region. As part of the ‘10M in 10’ project, the restoration program will help create a new massive forestry around Negros Oriental.

10M in 10 for Greener Negros

Last year, the Department of Energy and Natural Resources (DENR) and Energy Development Corp. (EDC) launched the 10M in 10 for Greener Negros project. This is a project that aims to restore massive forestry around Negros Oriental by planting 10 Million trees and plants within 10 years.

So far, the program has successfully planted 150,00 mangrove trees already in the Tanjay Boardwalk of Tanjay City (where they were assigned).

Mangrove

Mangroves are small trees or shrubs known for its adaptive characteristics to harsh coastal conditions and wave actions. With its complex root structure, it can stand firmly despite the waves. They can be found throughout the world with between the latitudes 25o N and 25o S, mainly in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Mangrove trees are also known to for being the habitats for some coastal marine creatures.

According to the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (NOCCI) president, Edward Du, their goal was actually just to plant 100,000 covering the first year of the program which runs from October 2016 up to this month (October 2017). They have exceeded by 50,000 trees already!

“We will be inviting more NOCCI members this year to join us so we can double the first year’s target for next year,” said NOCCI president Edward Du.
