After the presidential election back in 2016, the idea of Barangay Elections and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Polls have been unfortunately neglected by many. Some Filipinos may consider it as a long vacation and rest, while some may consider it as a rather inefficient scheduling and planning at the governing offices.

2018 Barangay Elections

According to the La Union 2nds District Representative Sandra Young-Eriguel, it was the initial decision of the majority of congressmen to postponed the May 2018 Barangay and SK elections. Instead, it will then be held on October along with the plebiscite for BBL and Federalism.

The Barangay Elections and SK Poll were scheduled back in 2017 for the month of October. However, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the RA 10952 on October 2, 2017, rescheduling the whole election and poll to May 2018.

No 2019 Elections

Despite the facts of the never-ending story and the rescheduled/ extensions of the elections, Senator JV Ejercito and Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson expressed their views to the people regarding the 2019 elections which will not happen.

Might be a difficult to make people accept that there will be no elections. People look forward to elections which is a referendum of all elected officials,” said Senator JV Ejercito.

Senator Ping Lacson, on the other hand, said that it is true that the barangay elections have been postponed and rescheduled many times. He also said that making a no-election and term extension scenario will not help anything.

They refuse to learn from history. Floating a no-el, term extension scenario won’t help charter change,” Lacson quoted.
