10 Years Solid Waste Management Plan for Negros Oriental

The different Local Government Units of Negros Oriental are setting up a 10 years solid waste management plan and dumpsite safe closure and rehabilitation from the years of 2018 to 2028. A workshop which ended last Friday was conducted by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Visayan sector.

Solid wastes may not be the biggest problem as of the moment in our society. However, in due course of time, solid waste will be a big issue that will downgrade many attractions all over Negros Oriental. With the Solid Waste Management plan for 10 years, the different LGU of Negros Oriental can work hand in hand for the cleaner and fresher environment everybody deserves.

Environmental Management Bureau Workshop

The workshop was held by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) with 19 LGUs attending. Six of the local government who attended were from Siquijor Island – Enrique, Villanueva, San Juan, Larena, Siquijor, and Lazi, while the SCRP of the municipality of Maria is in the final stage of preparation. All of which presented their respective Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan (SCRP).

From Negros Oriental, only Dumaguete City was able to present the SCRP while Basay, Manjuyod, Canlaon City, Guihulngan City, Vallehermoso, Sta. Catalina and Valencia were able to submit drafts of their respective SCRPs. Bacong, Siaton, Sibulan, and Zamboanguita, on the other hand, have yet to submit even drafts of SCRPs while that of Mabinay was returned.

Dumaguete City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (ENRO), Chelvier Patrimonio said the city is fortunate to have gotten more than PHP8 million in financial assistance from DENR to fund the SCRP, which is pegged at PHP17 million. Included in the rehabilitation component is the installation of monitoring wells, construction of a PHP7 million Material Recovery Facility and the sanitary landfill.
